Keeping Cool at Camp: Making the Most of a Hot Summer

We’ve been incredibly lucky with the weather this summer, with weeks of sunshine and some fantastic conditions across our camps.

Of course, when temperatures rise, keeping children safe, comfortable and happy becomes even more important. Our teams have adapted brilliantly, making sensible changes throughout the day while still making sure camp feels fun, active and full of energy.

Adapting Activities to the Conditions

On the hottest days, we’ve slowed the pace of camp where needed and adjusted activities to suit the weather.

That has meant making more use of shaded areas, choosing lower-intensity activities at the hottest points of the day and building in extra breaks when children need them.

Rather than letting the heat get in the way of camp, our coaches have used it as an opportunity to mix things up and make the most of the incredible summer conditions.

We’re lucky to have fantastic indoor facilities across our sites, so the fun definitely doesn’t stop when the temperature rises!

Keeping Everyone Hydrated

Hydration has been a big focus throughout the summer.

Children have been encouraged to keep their water bottles with them as they move around camp, with regular reminders from coaches to stop and drink throughout the day. Water has been readily available for refills whenever needed.

Our teams have also been keeping a particularly close eye on younger children to make sure they are taking regular drinks, even when they are busy having fun.

Sun Safety

We’ve also worked closely with parents to make sure children arrive ready for the sunshine.

Families have been reminded to send children to camp wearing sun cream, with additional sun cream packed where required, as well as a named sunhat or cap and a refillable water bottle.

Coaches have been on hand to remind and assist children with reapplying their own sun cream throughout the day when necessary.

One of our favourite Coach Cubs tips has also been particularly useful this summer: freezing an additional bottle of water or squash overnight. It slowly defrosts during the day, giving children a cold drink later on while also helping to keep their lunch cool.

A Fantastic Summer So Far

The sunshine has helped create a brilliant atmosphere across our camps this summer.

From outdoor games and sports to activities in the shade, our teams have done a fantastic job of adapting each day while keeping safety at the heart of everything we do.

Most importantly, the children have continued to enjoy everything that makes Club Excel special – having fun, trying new activities, spending time with friends and making the most of their summer holidays.

A huge thank you to our camp teams for the way they’ve managed the conditions, and to all of our parents for helping children arrive prepared for another sunny day at Club Excel.
